Guandu Temple
Being a religious and spiritual consolation symbol to people in northern Taiwan, Guandu Temple was established in 1661; it is now the oldest temple in northern Taiwan. Having the location on the top of Linshan, it was first known as Linshan Temple. Undergone three times of remodeling and transformations, the name Guandu Temple was received in 1921.
Earning popularities among believers, a legend tells the three banyan trees that located in front of the temple withered simultaneously overnight. The residents took this sign as a warning for upcoming disasters and made precautions. As a matter of fact, soon after the incident, the Japanese invaded and set fire to houses in Guandu area. Nevertheless, many people were able to escape the invasion due to omen that was believed given by Mazhu.
Carrying an enriched history background, Guandu Temple is decorated with fine carvings, paintings, architectures, sculptures, etc. These fantastic works include fine carvings of historical stories on the walls of the main hall and stair guardrails with fine carvings of embossed reliefs. At the altar, the magnificent statue of Mazhu and her two generals of Qianliyan (thousand-mile eyes) and Shunfenger (wind ears) are by her sides. Mazhu’s affable smiling face is a great contrast to her rigor fierce-looking generals. Visitors may also find various picturesque skillful paintings on each sides, pillars, and ceilings of the chamber.
